An article in the Statesman today, Charities Suffering in Ailing Economy, focuses on how charities are suffering in this slow economy, especially with cash donations. It cites some scary statistics (“Contributions to the American Red Cross of Central Texas have decreased nearly 50 percent”?!?!) but also goes on to say that there are some bright spots–the Dell Foundation donated $825,000 in surprise grants and that sort of thing.
If you don’t have the cash to donate (and who does these days?) try donating some of your time instead. You’re likely off of work a few extra days this week and next, so use that time to help out at one of the myriad of charities we have in Austin. Community Impact Newspaper compiled this amazingly thorough list of where you can volunteer this season: Area Volunteer Opportunities – December 2008.
‘Tis the Season!
