My scout at 17th & Colorado says “Tailgating already: there are like 4 dudes out front of here drinking and tailgating.” It’s Friday, 9:14am, folks.
Longhorn fans will once again have the opportunity to be a part of the ESPN College GameDay experience, as the show is set to cover the team for the fourth time in the last two seasons and the 12th time in its history when No. 2 Texas hosts Texas Tech on Saturday (this is a revenge game, people, expect a FIRED UP UT crowd). The set will be located on the south side of the UT Tower with the broadcast beginning at 9am.
So I went to Rice. My (undefeated, awesome) powderpuff football team had as many tailgaters as our intercollegiate games. But if there’s anything Rice Owls know how to do, it’s drink at 6am in the morning. See, we have this little tradition called Beer Bike, which starts with music blaring throughout the college at 6am, goes through a giant water balloon fight and bike race, and ends with the entire campus passed out by noon. Alumni, with children, included.
Let me suggest a Starbucks latte with whiskey.
After a post-ESPN Gameday but pre-actual-gameday NAP to the max, let me suggest for your tailgating pleasure:
Austin Sports & Social Club has a new prime location tailgate spot filled with everything you could want in a pre-game hangout. Regardless of whether you have a ticket to the actual game, come eat & drink with us beforehand.
When: Saturday, September 19th. 1pm – 7pm. UT vs Texas Tech
Where: On Congress between 18th & MLK, directly across from the Bob Bullock Museum. Look for the 20×20 silver tent with the Austin SSC banner in the front row.
Cost: $7
Why Stop By?: We provide all the beer, food, and entertainment! Come play washers or relax and watch all the college football games on a big screen. No need to wait in line for the bathroom either – we have our own exclusive for our tailgate.
I can’t imagine tailgating this early in the season and not having to worry about the sweat stains soaking my burnt-orange gear. What a feeling!
