Wow, I’ve been running across some great deals lately! Looks like I’m doing my part to fuel the economy, even if it is at discounted rates … I’ve always thought that you should never pay full price for a magazine subscription, because here’s a secret: they don’t make money off your subscription. They make money off of ads, which are sold to people who want to know that there are tons of subscribers. So they might as well GIVE you the magazine, so they can sell more ads!
Of course, if they just GAVE the magazine away, it’d be worth less in the mind of the consumer, so they’ve gotta charge something. Take advantage of this insider knowledge and check out Mag A Day, a website that offers a limited number of magazine subscriptions at wholesale rates. I just bought a year of SELF magazine (heartbreaking, I know, since I worked at SHAPE) for $3.95!
Sure, the magazine might fold tomorrow, but then they’ll roll your subscription over into another magazine and before you know it you’ve got ten years of Vogue, which, according to the New York Times, is so in bed with advertisers it will be the last magazine to fail.
Anyway, the owners of the company are friendly, which you gotta love. So thanks for the cheap subs, Tom!
