Shopping Research List: Camp Stove

My friend Matt nerds out over gear shopping. I wish I was like Matt, because I want the best deal on the best camp stove but I do not have the patience for comparing weights down to the ounce and features down to the speed to boil … for my camp stove, do I want an Integrated? Upright? Wood-burning? (the linked words go to some great research I’ve been poring over on types of stoves)

I am clearly missing the wilderness! Take me back! (this is in Kings Canyon, showing off my perfect lakefront spot and Big Agnes tent)

Just when you think you’re set on backpacking gear, you find out … there’s always more gear to get. As I’m usually the solo member of our backpacking party, it’s easy for me to borrow a camp stove from someone else. But at some point, I want to have all the right gear too! So I’ve been on the lookout for a good deal on a stove. I love the idea of the wood-chip-burning ones, but they’re mostly outlawed in California parks, so they’re a no-go.

Do I want to cook or just boil water? Let’s be honest, I hardly cook at home—all I need on the trail is to rehydrate my WalMart soups (I don’t need no expensive MountainHouse meals!) and make some instant coffee.

So I’m trying to decide if I’m going JetBoil ($80) camp stove like everyone else, or a Primus stove (for some reason, I sing that to the tune of the old “PrimeCo phone” jingle) like the Primus PrimeTech ($130)? or Primus ETA Lite ($50!)?

… any opinions? Advice? HAAAAAALP!
