The Summer Classic Film Series at the Paramount starts this Thursday with their classic opener, Casablanca. The Paramount is one of the few theatres still open today which screened Casablanca when it was originally released in 1942–wow! Wikipedia says that the film was a solid, if unspectacular, success in its initial run … and then says “despite a changing assortment of screenwriters frantically adapting an unstaged play and barely keeping ahead of production, and Bogart attempting his first romantic lead role, Casablanca won three Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Its characters, dialogue, and music have become iconic, and Casablanca has grown in popularity to the point that it now consistently ranks near the top of lists of the greatest films of all time.”
Yes, to see it in a movie theatre that screened it 67 years ago is pretty effing awesome. And they’re throwing a kick-off party before the screening to boot!

And, mark your calendars for the following Thursday, when this movie magic happens:
Buster Keaton’s masterpiece, The General, will show with a live original score by Guy Forsyth & his band. It’ll be the first time in almost 5 years that Guy has performed this piece, but the last time he did I hear it was “exceptional.” It’s pretty stinkin’ cool, what the Paramount is doing this summer… Check out this Guy Forsyth vid:
