Admittedly, after our honeymoon in Guatemala that Handsome Humanitarian Warrior Husband of mine and I are a bit obsessed with Guatemala. But I’m pretty sure this debut novel stands on its own: Daughter of Fire by Sofia Robleda.

I tried to name it historical fiction; Amazon says it’s Native American literature but also calls it a novel. Without going too deeply into the distinction of a Mexican author writing about Guatemala being called Native American literature … that’s not, generally, how most people would define this book. But regardless of categorization, the book is a wonderful mix of myth, feminism, familial ties, and love.

And, means that I have to go back to Guatemala City and do more than fly in and out—I have to visit the Popol Vuh Museum! The Popol Vuh is a written history but also central character in the story and now I need to know more.

Speaking of knowing more … as a result of reading this, I ordered a book from a university which 21-year-old college senior in “Bondage in North America” seminar attendee Lys both loves and groans at: Forced Native Labor in Sixteenth-Century Central America, from the professor who consulted with Robleda about her novel.
