So apparently I’ve never snatch-balanced before.
Yesterday’s .com workout was 1-1-1-1-1-1-1 snatch balance and I thought, oh yay! a skill we hardly ever work on!
Um. Make the “never” not “ever” for me. After a light warmup, I loaded up 105#, thinking it was a great starting place before my “work” reps.
Ha.
Good one, Lys. I could do several reps with it, but any weight over and I was throwing the bar everywhere, wobbling like a maniac, coming onto my toes, and generally just out of sync. Off-balance, if you will.
A few more disastrous attempts at heavier weight and I stepped back and re-evaluated. Clearly, I haven’t worked much (or at all) on the snatch balance. Why on earth would I try to max out on a movement I don’t have a fundamental grasp on?
So I backed off. Loaded the bar with 65# for 3 sets of 5 reps. Completed those with perfect form, excellent depth, and solid movement. Allowed myself the ego boost of going up to 75# for 2 sets of 3 reps. And went home.
With a strong, balanced snatch balance. It’s not a max, but at least I have the fundamentals down.
