Massage Envy and Maki

Today I will tell you about my foray to ArborWalk and the two great things I discovered there:

1) Massage Envy: That national chain you see offering you $39 massages. Locally we have 13 of them. Recently I received a gift card, so I hightailed it to the ArborWalk store and requested a deep tissue massage. The receptionist said, “Oh, Chad will be great for that.” Chad indeed was great. The atmosphere at Massage Envy was efficient but inviting. Once on the table, he was one of only two masseuses I’ve ever had who really did use firm pressure when I asked. He worked on my shoulder, which I had tweaked doing ring dips a few days before, and really seemed to FEEL the stress and work it out. I’ve NEVER had a masseuse do that before, though my dad has always been able to. It was awesome.

I definitely want to go back to Chad. Here’s the lowdown: if you sign up for a 6-month package of massages, 1 a month, you get each massage for $49. Then any additional massages are $39. It’s a pretty good deal if you’re committed to getting massages, and the convenience of having locations all over Austin is very nice. For more info: http://massageenvy.com/

2) Post-massage, I realized I was hungry. So I stopped into Maki, the roll-your-own-sushi joint (really, they roll it for you in a Chipotle Maki Sushiassembly-line style) that’s been hailed by some as amazing and taunted by some as the epitome of bad Americanized sushi. Say what you will, I absolutely LOVED my roll. I had some spicy yellowtail with cucumber, asparagus, and avocado in a seaweed wrapper with crab stick salad on top and sesame chili oil. It sounds giant, and it is. 10 pieces, with a GENEROUS portion of crab on top. Spicy. Sweet. Totally me, exactly what I wanted. I will be back. It’s not cheap, my roll totaled $9.25, but it’s not expensive either (had I forgone the crab on top, I’d have saved $1.75), and it just hit the spot.

They have a frequent diner card. Uh oh.

UPDATE:

Maki does rolls sans rice! I am so excited right now. It did make my roll sort of small, but I’ll know next time to stuff it with more STUFF. Hello Paleo sushi roll!
