The bikini was created/first appeared at a poolside fashion show in Paris on July 5, 1946. The then shockingly skimpy design, dubbed the bikini after the Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands, took twenty-plus years to really catch on … and now we’ve moved to even more shockingly-skimpy designs with the prevalence of thong bikinis (remember when I first discovered San Lorenzo?).
To my friends afraid to try the teeny-weeny butt bikini because they don’t think they have great butts … let me reiterate that time and time again I have seen butts that look meh in saggy full-butt bottoms look infinitely better in cheeky or even riskier styles. Give it a shot. You will not be picking your wedgie the entire time. Suns out buns out, after all!
My current fave brands: Patagonia for tops for beach volleyball, still loving my San Lorenzo garder-style for bottoms, and maaji for bottoms—THE softest, and all reversible. Also included in the roundup below are some Victoria’s Secret—great to try styles on the cheap this time of year—and a few brands I haven’t tried but am dying to like Boys + Arrows and Acacia.
I’ve been obsessed with ‘kinis since I was a kid, and now that I live at the beach and can mix-n-match tops and bottoms willy nilly, I love them even more. Check out more of the ‘kinis I’m coveting at pinterest.com/lyssamyska/fashionnow-i-live-at-the-beach.
