Unexpectedly on a road trip from Aspen to Denver, I snarfed cabbage soup for breakfast before we left and packed an apple and leftover dinner from the night before for lunch, assuming finding a salad with meat would be easy for dinner.
We spent most of the day at the hospital supporting a friend, our friends, and family. Everyone there to see our friend went out to eat dinner at a hole-in-the-wall Mexican place, where I figured ordering fajita veggies on salad with some fish would not be a problem.
Um. The menu had no fish on it, or shrimp, or anything but chicken, beef, and cheese. So I asked the waitress, with a big smile and apologetic tone, to bring me a plate of salad and all the veggies they have, steamed. She was very concerned as she said, “We just have peppers and onions?”
But she was incredibly accommodating and I ended up getting a giant plate of lettuce with peppers and onions, topped with a delicious tomato and onion salsa. It was awesome!
We did stop by Whole Foods on the way home so I could get 3.5 ounces of salmon and 1/2 cup blackberries.
It kinda sucks, but it’s also worth it. If I hadn’t been doing the HCG, I likely would have had a few beers with everyone else at dinner, definitely a few chips with my salsa, and probably a guacamole taco or something equally unappetizing, possibly even a bit of fried ice cream. And throughout the day I probably would have munched on a cookie or cupcake or two, because everyone baked for everyone else at the hospital. At least this way my food was fresh and my stomach didn’t hurt afterward.
I’m not going to lie, this isn’t easy. And I couldn’t weigh myself and be excited by my progress. But my stomach is flatter (I think!) and I feel good, not hungry.
