Hangover for Halloween (Workout or Booze?)

They just announced the workouts for CrossFit Central’s The Butcher Challenge I’m competing in on Saturday morning. Looks like Nature’s Garage Gem/Gym is good prep for most things, but a 1-rep max snatch? Sticks do not compare.

Here are the workouts:

WOD 1: Butcher push, pullups and bouldering: AMRAP 12 minutes.
-Each team will be splint in half (2 and 2): 2 people will push the Butcher down and back, switch places and push down and back again. The other two people will complete AMRAP of 10 pullups, 5 sandbell boulders [what the hell is a sandbell boulder?]. If one member of team cannot boulder, that person must wait for assistance from the person doing pullups. When the two people pushing the Butcher finish their trips, the pairs will switch and repeat.
-At the end of the AMRAP, each team will have 6 minutes to transition to the SNATCH area.
-Each team will then have 12 minutes to establish a ONE-REP MAX Snatch for EACH member of their team.
***SCORE = the number of pullups completed by each team in 12 minutes + max snatch weight (as team, in pounds).
Ex: Team completes 100 pullups in 12 minutes, max snatches for each member (100, 80, 120, 225 = 525). 100+525 = 625 score.
WOD 2: Across the river: butcher push, double-unders, deadlifts and box jumps.
-Each team will designate a “pusher”. “Pusher” will ferry person 1 unknown distance to work station. “Pusher” will continue to retrieve and ferry person 2 and 3 to work stations.
-WORK STATIONS: 21-15-9 of deadlifts, double-unders and box jumps. Each person must complete all reps at their station before advancing to the next station. Once all team members have completed all reps at all stations, the “pusher” will ferry each member back to the start. The WOD is complete once all members are back to the start.
***Score  = Time to completion.

I may have a workout hangover Sunday morning …

BUT if you’re planning on imbibing, this is BY FAR the BEST hangover prevention/cure/advice I’ve ever read. I’ve excerpted my faves, but really, you must go read the whole post at CrunchyBetty‘s The Big Blog of Hangover Remedies.

Before a Hangover:

  • Protect your stomach with olive oil. Before even thinking about your first drink, take 2 teaspoons of olive oil. It will help protect the lining of your stomach and slow the absorption of alcohol. Plus, olive oil is FULL of antioxidants that will hurry away the toxins you’re about to bombard your system with.
  • Eat a meal with a liberal amount of garlic before drinking. Garlic contains a cysteine that neutralizes some of the hangover-causing compounds in alcohol. While it might not make you a great date, it’ll help you the next day.
  • Don’t forget the three-glasses-before-sleep rule. Before nodding off to sleep, drink three glasses of water. Chances are, if you’re fearing a hangover the next morning, you’re probably dehydrated already.
  • Take a vitamin B-complex capsule. This is my personal favorite. Before sleeping (and while you’re doing the three-glasses rule), take a vitamin B-complex capsule. It gives your body back the B’s you’ve robbed from it all night, and you wake up feeling more refreshed and less groggy.

Morning After (during the hangover, that is):

  • Take your Bs and honey. My pharmacist friend recommended this quick hangover cure that she swears by. In the morning, take a B-complex supplement with two teaspoons of honey (or honey dissolved in lukewarm water). Honey is a natural hangover buster.
  • Break out the ginger root. If a queasy, upset stomach is what ails you, fresh ginger will help like nothing else. Peel a finger of ginger and cut it into dime-sized slices. Pour boiling water over and let it steep for 15 minutes. Add a little honey, and you’ve got a great remedy for the queasy stomach.
  • Have pickle juice, pickle juice, pickle juice! This is an age-old remedy that’s gaining in popularity again. When you wake up, drink 1/4 c. of pickle juice (however you can force it down). Good luck with that.
