Suppdate: what the hell?!
The Cleanse I committed to includes Fiber Drink, Cleanse Supps, Probiotics, and Omegaplex, followed by MNS-3, all by Advocare. I’m ready to take my Fiber Drink yesterday morning to start off The Cleanse. This is what it says on the website:
Fiber Drink / #W4062 / Price: $17.50
- Available in Citrus and Peaches & Cream
- 10 grams of fiber per serving (6 grams of soluble fiber, 4 grams of insoluble)
- Supports intestinal function*
- Enhances nutrient absorption*
- Helps promote regularity*
- For optimal wellness, use as part of the Herbal Cleanse kit*
Key Ingredients:
Fiber blend, both soluble and insoluble, including: Gum acacia, guar gum, cellulose, oat bran, fruit pectins and psyllium seed
But on my package, these are the first five Actual Ingredients:
Fiber Blend, Fructose, Maltodextrin, Citric Acid, Natural and Artificial Flavors
70 Calories, 17 g carbs, 6g sugar
The 2nd and 3rd ingredients are sugars?!
What kind of cleanse ADDS sugars to my diet?! I’m very careful to only include sugars I WANT in my diet (cookies, brownies, margaritas …) and avoid all the randomly added others–I will literally put back on the shelf soups, sauces, and dressings that have fructose, or high fructose corn syrup, added to them. But now a CLEANSE has them added?!
How can CrossFitters, who love the Paleo diet, support this? I eat Paleo, most of the time. When I don’t eat Paleo, it’s a conscious choice. I, with a team of others, kept an informative food blog called The Label Says Paleo about eating clean and its challenges. I’m trying to fall in line with the reasoning that perhaps this particular Cleanse simply wasn’t intended for me. Perhaps it’s intended for people who don’t eat clean, who need to flush out their systems, and a little sugar in their soda-candy-fast-food diet isn’t that bad.
But that’s just not true. NO ONE needs added sugar in their diets. NO ONE. If you eat soda, candy, and fast food, you certainly don’t need added sugar in your diet, even MORE so than me.
There are a billion ways to “cleanse” your system, if that’s what you really need. Hell, drink some Smooth Moves tea every night before bed and you’ll wake up every morning and cleanse first thing. Eat only veggies for a week or ten days — that’ll get you feeling lean and spry and healthy.
When I sent her a livid email, my food-exploration buddy Lisa responded: “Hmm…what is/was your goal for the cleanse? Are you really feeling like you need to be cleaned out, or were you just looking for a jump start to kick off healthier eating/weight loss?”
I don’t need to be cleaned out, I just wanted help with motivation for healthier eating, because in Aspen my diet has become much more lenient. And all the CC Coaches were doing this cleanse, so I thought the group-think might help me. I could just as easily eat veggies for a week or whatever. I just wanted help with the motivation.
So I was really mad at Advocare, for putting sugar in their “healthy” products, but I might also be a little mad at myself, for putting sugar in my “healthy” body. Sigh.
Suppdate: No cleanse. No Advocare ever again. If I’m supping, I need high quality, all clean ingredients.
