I did well maintaining my weight during most of my hamstring injury. But the past two weeks, I got a little bit of that fuckititis—you know, where you’re like, I want that cookie fuckit. Of course I drink wine every night after work, work is HARD (not really), fuckit. I’m in Aspen with my fave people, of course I should EAT ALL THE FOOD and DRINK ALL THE DRINKS—fuckit. Well, kids, that shows. Consider me a faux celeb in the off-season of filming. Except I’m not, so something had to be done.
As the hammy is healing slower than expected and I’m trying my damndest to NOT battle an injury for the rest of my life, my preferred method of dieting lightly and working out heavily is out. I love to work out. Diets are for the birds. So, I decided to do an experiment on myself (because who else would I experiment on?): I would first fast for 2 days (that means no food, fools) and then follow a super-low-carb-diet for 3 days before returning to a normal diet (of mostly “paleo” or “primal” foods). The tale of the fasting portion follows (I’m still doing the low carb part, and that’s boring anyway).
10/20/13: 6pm … consume cookie in car on the way home from San Diego (well, just being honest)
10/21/13: 8am … hour 14 of fast … skip breakfast … not unusual … forgo coffee = unusual
10/21/13: 1:30pm … hour 19.5 of fast … despite hunger, turn down free lunch
10/21/13: 3:30pm … hour 21.5 of fast … a mild thumping headache begins … little motivation for work
10/21/13: 5:30pm … hour 23.5 of fast … raging headache. Must. Go. Run. To. Shake. Headache.
10/21/13: 7:30pm … house 25.5 of fast … watching TV, relaxing, and NOT eating—oddly refreshing once I get over it … blood sugar 91
10/21/13: 9:30pm … hour 27.5 of fast … headache is intensifying as I try to fall asleep. Still, only takes 5 minutes to fall asleep and sleep solidly through the night
10/22/13: 8am … hour 38 of fast … am not super hungry, skipped coffee again, very minor headache … blood sugar 96
10/22/13: 1pm … hour 43 of fast … COFFEE!!! minor headache of morning went away (pre-coffee), energy level is good, not hungry (but it does “feel” like time to eat … conditioning)
10/22/13: 6pm … hour 48 of fast … grocery store + food prep = torture
10/22/13: 9pm … hour 51 of fast … holding strong for the morning … blood sugar 87
10/23/13: 7:30am … hour 61.5 of fast … wake up energized and hungry … blood sugar 71
10/23/13: 8am … hour 62 of fast … ate a steak, grassfed, 3 ounces / 12:15pm salad (2 carb) with 1 egg and 2 egg whites / 2pm salad (1 carb) / 4pm cabbage soup (2 carb) / 6pm salmon patty + cabbage soup (2 carb) / 9pm protein shake = DID NOT EAT ENOUGH FOOD
Overall, it was a fun challenge. Am I going to do it again? Who knows, but it’s always nice to know that you can function without eating or consuming ANY calories for 62 hours!
