Today is Blog Action Day 2008. Never heard of it? Me neither. BUT it’s a good thing: bloggers (grrr, I hate being called a blogger) unite against poverty, in whatever way a particular blogger wants to. I’m going to use it as a jumping off point to encourage you to check out kiva.org.
Kiva has gotten lots of media attention because it is a micro-lending organization that directly supports impoverished entrepreneurs–and in the beginning, this was particularly women. When searching for people to lend to, you can still sort by gender if helping women around the world is your goal.
The coolest thing about Kiva, though, is the personal connection you make. You choose who to lend through based on an online profile, and throughout the course of the loan (usually 6-12 months), you can receive email journal updates and track repayments.
You can start with a little and quite literally change the world. Take some action today.
