As in, it’s as easy as the alphabet and numbers to CrossFit in Aspen even sans a gym! Ha, nerd. Also in that I live at this place in Aspen called ABC (Airport Business Center), which is actually 3 miles outside of downtown Aspen but is virtual heaven for dogs. And now for CrossFitters. This is nature’s garage gym … forget weights, all you need is some mountains, a bridge, a ski pole, and a little creativity and I have the makings for some killer CrossFit workouts (and thank goodness, gyms in Aspen are ridiculous expensive), and some boot-camp style conditioning stuff!
First up, a jog down these steps:
Then about a half mile run with the ski pole overhead, followed by a quick-and-dirty bastardization of a Coach Rut workout:
3 Rounds
25 Ski pole back squat push press
25 ski pole lateral jumps
Time: 3:33
Ski poles make surprisingly good olympic barbell stand-ins. Especially when you’re coming off a shoulder injury.
Then, the Burgener warmup with my ski pole on the wooden bridge (because it mimics a wooden platform … see?)
Also, my workout buddy!
Then, sprints across the bridge, and two 5 – 10 – 5 Sprints (thanks for the idea, CrossFit Santa Cruz!)
Then another round of Burgener warmup, another round of sprints, and some V-pushups. Leisurely stroll back the half mile, with some boulder jumps thrown in here while Nali played in the water:
And then an overhead ski pole hold run up those steps:
And done!
Oh, and of course this was all done in Vibrams. Because that’s how hippies roll, even over rocks.
I’ve been taking it pretty lightly the past couple of weeks, and I’ve felt good about it. Even once we had a been here in Aspen for a few days, I wasn’t feeling the 3-2-1-GO mentality, so I just took long walks with the dog and let it be. Today, the sun was shining, the weather was a warm 52 degrees (yes, that’s almost half the temp back in Austin!), and I got the itch again. Finally!
I’m pretty excited all this great stuff is in my backyard. It’s like nature’s Garage Gym!
