Bona Dea Bread

I like bread a lot. I like whole wheat bread mainly, because I like the richer flavor. I like hearty, dense breads. I like sourdough. I like Ezekiel sprouted grain bread. Much to the chagrin of my notions of eating a low-carb diet because it’s healthy, I find it nearly impossible to give up bread.

Enter the gift bag I recently picked up that contained a small, celephone(celephane? plastic)-wrapped orb covered in a light dusting of flour. Is it a cookie? No, too smooth. Is it a cracker? No, too soft. I open the package. I bite. It is dense, chewy, whole-wheaty bread. Disc-bread. I try to eat just half of the disc, which is about the size of a small hand outstretched.

Bread

I cannot eat just half. After devouring the entire thing, I head to the website listed on the package: bonadeabread.com

They say: “The perfect Friday bread served with goat cheese or hummus and a bottle of wine. This chewy dense bread is “raised” by  only the sourdough starter and finishes out at about an inch or so high. Ingredients include whole wheat and unbleached bread flours, rye sourdough starter, kalamata olives, salt, and water.”

I say: Let me eat bread.
