For and from one of my best friends, a strong, headstrong, resilient mother of dragons.
From facebook:
Former University of Georgia standout and NFL defensive back Paul Oliver died by suicide seven years ago today at age 29. For years before his death, Oliver battled near constant headaches and depression. His brain was later diagnosed with Stage 2 (of 4) Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE).
In 2019, the University of Georgia Athletic Department launched the “Wall of Inspir8tion” in Oliver’s memory. The wall is a place for students to post inspirational notes to each other and find resources if they are struggling with mental health.
Prevalence of suicidal thoughts, suicidal planning, and suicide attempts is significantly higher among adults aged 18-29 than adults 30+. Knowing the warning signs of suicide can help you know when to connect someone to professional help. As part of National Suicide Prevention Month, Paul Oliver’s family asks that you learn the five #BeThe1To steps to help someone in crisis at BeThe1To.com
It’s complicated being a football fan and knowing people personally affected by CTE, which is inextricably linked football. I don’t have the answer, but I do want to share resources when it makes sense.
