Like me, the man in the yellow jersey calls both Aspen and Austin home. While Austin may hold his Mellow Johnny’s and Juan Pelota establishments, Aspen is now home to his Wapiyapi Classic, a 25-mile or 50-mile bike race with a $200 fundraising requirement.
What’s a Wapiyapi?
Wapiyapi is the Lakota Sioux word for “healing”. But what is it for Lance? A summer camp for kids with cancer and their families.
According to Camp Wapiyapi:
In 1998, a group of University of Colorado Medical students established Camp Wapiyapi to provide at no cost, a respite for children with cancer and their families. Each week-long camp session offered a safe and nurturing environment to allow the children and their siblings the natural freedoms of childhood. Through participation in a variety of group activities, campers learned that they did not face their challenges alone.
In 2008, Wapiyapi expanded to include Family Retreats. These retreats offer families that have recently received a diagnosis an environment of understanding, comfort, and guidance to help them through this difficult time.
Register HERE, though the event isn’t til Sept 26, registration fees go up by $5 (gasp!) after August 1.
