I made it through 16 years of competitive basketball with just one ankle sprain–quite the feat for a female basketball player. And then.
Last night I was playing some more basketball, and I jumped up and came down on the foot of the guy I was defending. My ankle rolled out and then in, I heard a sickening crunch, and the guys immediately stopped playing with exclamations of, “oh my god!” Thanks, fellas.
I was more scared it was broken than I was in pain. I walked away on it, and walked for about half an hour, and kept it mobile.
My friend V advocates for MEAT not RICE in injury treatment, so I did sort of a combo. MEAT: Movement, Exercise, Natural Analgesiacs, Treatment; RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. I moved around, then elevated the ankle and iced it 20-on, 20-off for several hours. I drank my MSM and took my ibuprofen (natural and non-natural analgesiacs).
I woke up this morning with an only-slightly-swollen ankle that is definitely hurt but I can walk on it pretty well! Wahoo! For anyone who sprains their ankle, I highly recommend keeping it as mobile as possible.
Send healthy vibes my way!
