#ActuallySheCan

LeaSuccessfulLast night at the gym, my male training partner pointed to a guy on TV and said, “how did that guy become the head of a chicken company?” and I said, “he’s an old white guy.”

I frequently point out how much easier it is for an old, white guy to succeed at business. This article reveals a lot of data about how men and women are perceived in the workplace, and in my experience that (sometimes unconscious) bias is absolutely true—men are perceived as more capable in nearly every situation.

It’s an endless point of frustration for me, so when I heard about the new #ActuallySheCan empowerment campaign (sponsored by Allergan, an OC-based mega pharma company) encouraging young millennial women to achieve their professional, personal, health, wellness and societal goals, I was excited. Lea Shine

Celeb Lea Michele is the face of the campaign, and Emmy Rossum, Estelle, Mel B, Lo Bosworth, and Louise Roe have also joined the cause to express their ambitions and truths to perpetuate a larger conversation around female achievement and well-being.  This faux celeb is absolutely in.

Of course, there are issues around it all—why does a drug company have to capitalize on empowerment in order for us to be talking about it? Why does the hashtag have to include “Actually” when really #SheCan is the point? Why do we even need a damn campaign? BUT, despite or because of those issues, I am happy to support and share the cause—at this point in our societal history, anything that gets us all talking about women’s success is important and valuable.
