Arbitrary or no, there are things about forty that just make a person want to achieve by this birthday. In my case, it’s not always specific goals, more like a notion of “when I’ve grown up”—and FORTY is undeniably grown, right—I will have done these things.
And, maybe I will have. I am getting married this year. I am searching for just the right vacation cabin to buy. I am an executive making a big impact in business.
But lord knows I may never be grown.
18 days after my 39th birthday, when I woke up before sunrise to soak in a hot spring in Colorado, without further adieu:

- Get married
- Buy a vacation cabin
- Own that executive persona
- Make a big impact in business
- Think through career goals and options
- Have a wonderful bachelorette party 🙂
- Ski something scary again (I’ve been taking it easy)
- Wear the most fun wedding dress(es)
- Take an epic honeymoon trip
- Join Crux + climb more
- Play!
- Always take my shoes off and walk in rivers, streams, creeks, and other bodies of water
- Pause before reacting
- Listen to more music / new to me music
- Prioritize sleep
- Hike more (even in Austin)
- Get Bob to stop losing his mind on leash around other dogs
- Stay home a few weekends
- Drink really, really good wine
- Buy clothes that fit
- Discover new music
- Attend at least as many concerts as I did this year
- More baths + add more ambiance
- More unscheduled time
- More nice dresses
- More dates to wear them to
- Earlier bedtimes
- Take work less seriously
- Remember that stress doesn’t solve anything. Clear intentions and content minds solve everything.
- Read at least as many books as I read this year
- get back on that weekly fgf cadence for this here blog
- Use “let me let you go” more often at work #southernhospitality
- Make some side $$ (how? idk)
- Cook new dishes (I think someone is tired of a protein + veg bowl)
- Take another long road trip
- Keep less stuff
- Reorganize house to better accommodate a Handsome Helpful Humanitarian Warrior
- Spend time with nephew + niece
- Be intentional with time
- Hold on to never growing up! 🙂
