This is the piece Big Medium chose for the art book, and it will live on in infamy …
The story around this one is interesting. I had taken a reclaimed canvas I identify with—a light blue with white stars stenciled all over it, procured from a goodwill—and started playing with a new-to-me technique of swirling piles of paint together. Later that week, I threw a party where a friend of a friend told me that she was an artist.
She went to check out my work in the cabana, and I was nervous because no “real” artists have seen my work … she liked it! So we started kind of painting together on that painting, partially because the swirling I had been playing with earlier was definitely her style and partially because I was just deferring to her and having fun at a party.
The next time I went to look at that painting, I was like, “wut?! This isn’t me!” So I painted ME, leaving a little bit of “our” work showing because it’s always good to know what you’ve overcome… then I scraped off some of it, all the way down to the original canvas, because “I Know Who I Am.”
As for the artist? She later told me she couldn’t make it as an artist and had to turn to blogging for a career.
